With German reunification, the public insurers expanded their activities into the new Eastern German states.

Some public insurers expanded their business territory into the new federal states. And new companies were also established.

New Federal States – New Areas of Operation

The then Provinzial Kiel expanded its business territory and became active in the new federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In Berlin, Feuersozietät/Öffentliche Leben revived its pre-war tradition, and – with a second headquarters in Potsdam – once again became active in Brandenburg.

In Thuringia, an insurer from Western Germany entered the market: the then SV SparkassenVersicherung Öffentliche Versicherungsanstalt Hessen-Nassau. Following the creation of the cross-state Savings Banks Association of Hesse-Thuringia, it also expanded its business territory into Thuringia.

Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, by contrast, took a different path: Here, new insurers emerged from cooperation between the East German savings banks and public insurers from Western Germany. In 1992, the public insurers from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, together with the Saxon savings banks, founded “Sparkassen-Versicherung Sachsen Lebensversicherung AG” and “Sparkassen-Versicherung Sachsen Allgemeine Versicherung AG”. In 1991, Saxony-Anhalt also received its own insurer with “ÖSA – Öffentliche Versicherung Sachsen-Anhalt”. Initial support from Western Germany came from the neighbouring Lower Saxony insurers, Landschaftliche Brandkasse Hannover and Öffentliche Sachversicherung Braunschweig.

With courage and perseverance, many citizens of the former GDR succeeded in changing the political system. In 1989, they brought down the Wall and laid the foundations for reunification. In 1990, what belonged together finally grew together again.

Reunification instantly expanded the business areas and growth potential of the public insurers. And Deutsche Rück benefited from this: Over the following years, it steadily increased its premium income, from Deutsche Mark (DM) 891.0 million in 1989 to DM 1.49 billion in 1994.
